I am a writer, and I believe this in my soul. Words are powerful. And their exact nuance and flavor matter.
Words can wound as easily as they can heal. And, they should be chosen intentionally.
I read a very interesting LinkedIn post recently. One of my LinkedIn colleagues, Joe Apfelbaum, wrote a post and created a poll about the word "blessing."
We've been 'taught' in recent years to be very aware and PC about our language, which is both good and bad.
When someone sneezes, we still might say, "Bless you" And there is a whole history to that from an earlier plague.
One of the symptoms of the plague was coughing and sneezing, and it is believed that Pope Gregory I (Gregory the Great), the Bishop of Rome from 590 to 604, suggested saying “God bless you” after a person sneezed in hopes that this prayer would protect them from an otherwise certain death.
In the last couple of decades, I have been more reluctant to use the word blessing. And, I have very mixed feelings about that.
So, I was super intrigued when I saw the poll.
The poll Joe shared asked the question, "Do you believe in the power of a blessing?" I included a screenshot of the poll below.
92% of the 78 people who voted responded, "Yes, Bless me!"
I love that!
It's like I've just been granted permission to show how much I care!
I read an article this morning from Fast Company, 4 Leadership Trends to Watch in 2025. #4 is about Civility. Sad, really.
Let's bring back more than just civility. I, for one, would like to go above and beyond.
Another conversation I have had over and over about trends is about analog vs. digital.
I am a Digital Queen. But, I am also a big fan of snail mail greeting cards, hugs, and the smell of paper in real newspapers and books, and if they would please resurrect the stick shift, I would be the world's happiest camper.
We've changed a lot since this recent plague. Dramatically so.
The world is going through its biggest disruption ever. No part of life or business can escape this disruption.
So, I find great comfort in good old-fashioned things, like blessings. Like meeting IRL vs. Zoom whenever you can. Shopping is small businesses where they still take pride in gorgeous displays and customer service.
Lots to think about as we head into a New Year.
I hope that you find Joy and Comfort in many things this Holiday Season! Indulge yourself and your loved ones.
Many Blessings!
Until next time...
Angela
