What you don't want to know about LinkedIn

August 21, 20252 min read

I have been talking about this and trying to get the message across for a long time. But I don't think it's being received.

So, I made a graph.

I took the most recent data (above). Professionals over the age of 55 make up less than 4% of the membership on LinkedIn.

It's shocking. It might make you gasp.

Our individual networks don't reflect that. Our networks get older and the LinkedIn membership gets younger.

And, they are using LinkedIn very differently.

Should you be alarmed?

No.

60% of the global LinkedIn membership is ages 25 - 34.

Do you serve that age category?

If you do, you will want to study them. Learn what they value, the language they use, how they think about business, what their goals are...

Pre-Pandemic, 30 - 40% of the content in the newsfeed was generated by Baby Boomers. How quickly things change.

If you have seen the changes, this explains a great deal of it.

The younger generations are less likely to build their identity around work. They like flexibility and frequent feedback. Hierarchy isn't exactly their thing.

Work - Life Balance is not an option for them. It is an essential.

Digital is their native language. They use humor, cartoons, and emojis more frequently. Overall, they are less formal.

Climbing the 'corporate ladder' feels like such a grind. And, they aren't wrong.

Sweeping generalizations. But, somewhat insightful.

In your network, you will not see dramatic changes. But, I do want you to be aware of what is going on outside your network.

Do you need new offerings for a new client base?

Do you need to learn more about how to appeal to younger generations?

How can you freshen up your Brand to make it more relevant?

We've never been in a more disruptive time. We must stay on our toes, watch, adapt, upskill, and ever be shifting to stay relevant in a constantly changing market.

Your outlook will determine your success.

I view it as an adventure. I want to continue to be 'youthful,' open-minded, and sharp.

Do everything you can to spend time with generations not your own. Adopt an ageless, global mindset.

Be ever curious, and the world is still yours.

Until next time...
