As a Wealth Manager, Investor, or any other professional in the Financial fields, including CPAs, Compliance is a four-letter word.
The restrictions for anyone in investing positions are beyond prohibitive. Everything could be a hand slap.
To avoid the embarrassment of being called on the carpet, most financial professionals choose to do nothing.
In a competitive field, that doesn't work well.
Money is such a charged thing. So touchy to talk about. We all have our own biases and baggage around money.
Choosing a financial professional requires trust.
Personal Branding = Trust
What's an ambitious financial professional to do in a sea filled with other financial professionals?
The networking joke in Marin is - you can't spit at an event without hitting 10 financial professionals.
You determine which category of restriction you are in, and you strategically test the water.
There are 3 tiers of compliance -
The Worst- Investment and other Institutions that have not loosened things up even when Federal restrictions have. Change one word in your profile headline, and compliance gets involved. In this category, you do as they say and suffer the slings and arrows of compliance.
Middle of the Road- Institutions that are beginning to allow some latitude. The prevalent attitude seems to be, "Ask forgiveness, not permission."
Independent Brokers- They have restrictions for the individual products and services they offer, but otherwise, it's a little easier to post personal updates, etc. Do as you please with moderate restraint.
